A portrait is a record of a point in time for you and your loved ones.  It may be to celebrate a special occasion, an achievement or just something to say this is me now.

Unlike with Profile photos, where the photo has to work as a small image on a computer screen, Portraits want to work as a larger picture, whether it is one to share on the computer, to print out for the family album, to frame for the windowsill or wall, or even to print as a poster.
